As delicious as mushrooms can be, a lot of them are deadly poisonous. After grabbing some from a food truck, three people have become incredibly sick, suffering organ failure.
According to the sick patients, they bought the fungi from a food truck outside a farming community in Salinas, California. What they picked up was known as the Death Caps. The Latin name is amanita phalloides, and can be deadly when eaten. They look a lot like regular button mushrooms, but they most certainly are not.
After consuming the mushroom on New Year's Day, the three people became dangerously ill. Typical of mushroom poisoning, they developed diarrhea, sickness, and nausea. They were stuck to their toilets, bargaining with god for sweet release.
Dr. Erica Locke explained what the poor mushroom eaters were going through that led to their organ failure. "In that phase [of poisoning], people get profoundly dehydrated and can develop some kidney injury," she explained. "Then after about 24 hours of nausea, vomiting, and that cholera-like diarrhea, people start to feel a little bit better, what's called the senescent period, where they start to recover, and that is exactly what happened to these people."
Recovery From Organ Failure Underway For Unlucky Mushroom Munchers
After they began to feel better, the three hoped that their ordeal was over. However, once their symptoms began again, they released they were in the early stages of organ failure. Consequently, each of them was suffering from liver damage caused by the toxins in the mushrooms.
They were taken into emergency care, and have been treated accordingly. One of the mushroom munchers has recovered, and the doctors are hopeful for the other two. The toxins inflicted on their kidneys and liver are being flushed with hydration.
However, there are conflicting stories coming from the unlucky folks suffering from organ failure. Whereas they originally reported that they bought the deadly mushrooms from a food truck, the hospital suspects they foraged them
It is a dangerous game, mushroom picking. Despite there being a multitude of delicious and nutritious ones out there, there are equally many that will kill you. It's best to consult a professional forager if you can, and just leave anything you're not 100% on.
