If you want to get your hands on one of the legendary Dairy Queen Blizzard machines, then get yourself to one of the auctions going on for the 25 closed stores.
Around 25 Dairy Queen fast food stores are being shut down in Texas. This may sound like a lot, but the countrywide chain has over 4,500 total establishments. I don't think anyone is going to miss such a small number. More interesting is the equipment auctions that are coming as a result.
If you're in Texas and fancy bagging one of your own Dairy Queen blizzard machines, you might be in luck. The bidding for the various closing locations is now up online, so if you're in the mood for some high-grade kitchen equipment, get involved.
A Bit More Dairy Queen Than You Bargained For
However, there is a catch. It isn't possible to pick and choose what you want from the particular Dairy Queen establishments. If you win the bid, you win the whole restaurant. This includes all the equipment, the tables, chairs, and everything else. One of the outlets even demands you bring the enormous DQ sign home too.
There aren't many people that will have the space for a whole restaurant's worth of equipment. However, if you're looking to start up your own store, this could be a great opportunity. Kitchen equipment such as fryers and grills are not cheap.
But what anyone could do with a massive Dairy Queen sign is beyond me. With a few creative adjustments it could be repurposed while still avoiding a lawsuit, I guess.
The closures of the 24 Dairy Queen stores around Texas are nothing to worry about. The chain continues to be a huge success, even amid many other fast-food chain closures. The ones that are having their doors locked and equipment sold are simply underperforming.
Texas is still going to be one of the states with the most DQs in the country. Nobody is going to be saying goodbye to the legendary Blizzard flavors just yet. However, if you're in the mood for a TGI Fridays, you may want to get there soon. Their days are numbered.
