Through an act of incredible marketing, Fosters has managed to plant itself as the number one beer of Australia, or so the foreign market believes anyway. Speak to an actual Australian, though, and they won't even know what a Fosters is.
Having drunk my way around the world, quaffing multiple pints with locals of every language, I've learned what the boozers in the bars drink. Getting plastered with the natives and managing to retain some modicum of memory, I usually leave with a list of fantastic local beers.
Here is a selection of Australian beers that the locals really drink, making them favourites.
XXXX Gold

This is an incredibly light beer that wouldn't even be considered an alcoholic beverage in many European countries. However, it is the number one choice of beers by many Australians. Really, it makes sense, too. The stubby little cans are small enough to crush before they get warm in the heat of Australia, and they're low enough in alcohol to be drunk all day.
The cheap, cheerful, reliable XXX Gold is a regular at any event.
Great Northern Super Crisp Lager

Great Northern Brewing Company absolutely nailed their marketing and dominated the market seemingly out of nowhere in Australia with this favourite beer. But just because it's popular doesn't mean it's great.
The Super Crisp Lager is a paltry 3.5%, making it another all-day session beer. It's best served ice cold and has a completely inoffensive taste. If you just want a beer that won't break the bank and can still sink 12 of, it's the perfect beer. It's nothing to write home about, but that's what makes it one of the most popular beers in Australia.
Victoria Bitter

The age-old debate between VB and XXXX still rages on the island of Australia. Both are terrible beers on the most part, but both have a huge following and massive Australian market share. One thing VB definitely has over XXXX is the percentage. It's packing an extra percent more than the borderline soft drink that is XXXX.
Flavour-wise, though, it's another mild, unassuming larger despite its name as a bitter.
Goonbag
You know that bag that holds the wine inside a box wine? Yeah. It's that. It's not a beer, but it sure is common. A surefire way to get plastered for pennies. Pull it out and have a suck.
