FDA Makes Startling Discovery About McDonald's Supplier After E. Coli Outbreak

After 34 hospitalizations and one death, investigations into the McDonald's E. Coli outbreak have uncovered the disgusting conditions their supplier has been operating in.

When people eating McDonald's Quarter Pounder started coming down with E. Coli, an investigation was launched. It appeared that the slivered onions were the guilty party in the hamburger. The outbreak was then traced back to the supplier.

The supplier of the McDonald's slivered onions was the Taylor Farms facility in Colorado Springs. Once the source of the E. Coli was discovered, the FDA moved in to find out what had gone wrong. The results were shocking.

A form 483 was issued to the supplier which contained a list of citations for the distributor. According to the report, obtained by CBS News, there was equipment with considerable biofilm and food debris buildup. Biofilm is a collection of bacteria that covers a surface so thickly that it takes considerable effort to clean away.

Besides this, the McDonald's supplier also showed signs of visibly unclean work surfaces, leading to cross-contamination. Staff was also regularly seen not abiding by safe and hygienic work protocols. They were regularly witnessed handling food and not using the hand-washing sinks.

McDonald's No Longer Using E. Coli Supplier

McDonald's, independently of the FDA inspection, has ceased using Taylor Farms as a supplier. They have changed to another distributor for their slivered onions. Taylor Farms has since released a statement about the distribution center the FDA inspected.

"Taylor Farms is confident in our best-in-class food safety processes and the quality and safety of our products. As is common following an inspection, the FDA issued observations of conditions that could be improved at one of our facilities."

However, they were keen to point out that despite the unclean working conditions, no administrative or regulatory action was taken. They were simply given a warning and allowed to continue working. Despite the fact that 104 people fell ill due to E. Coli in the produce from this McDonald's supplier, they have not been reprimanded and continue to operate.

If this disgusts you, maybe it's time to stop ordering from fast food restaurants. You never know what you could be putting in your body. Buy fresh, and shop local. As if you needed any more reason to stop eating McDonald's.
