McDonald's, unsatisfied with its 25% domination of the fast food market share, started a spinoff called CosMc's, but it appears to be a flop.
The fast food giant is set to close the doors on half of its newly opened CosMc's outlets as they struggle to pick up traction. The new food outlet was hoping to capitalize on the drive-through beverage craze. They focused on serving caffeine-infused drinks such as the Iced French Toast Galaxy Latte and Iced Oat & Honey Moon Latte.
However, the cosmic-themed drive-through beverage outlet didn't go galactic as McDonald's hoped. Since opening up six outlets in Texas, McDonalds has chosen to shut down half of their CosMc's. They are instead trying to focus on smaller outlets, condensing the experience.
Speaking about their new endeavors, McDonald's released a statement. "Sometimes the smallest stars shine the brightest. Since opening CosMc's, we have had the benefit of testing out different location sizes and setups - from revamping larger restaurant spaces to building smaller prototype locations that focus more on the drive-thru and digital experience."
Mixed Response to CosMc's McDonald's Spinoff
McDonald's made a move into the beverage market at an opportune time. As Starbucks started tanking and with the success of Utah-based Swig, the timing seemed perfect. Non-alcoholic drinks seem to be the ready market.
People had a mixed response to the new business venture for McDonald's. The fast food outlet has many die-hard fans, and a lot of them were happy to travel all the way to Texas to try the new drinks. "THIS LOOKS SOOOO GOOD OMG. WAIT THEY BOUT TO PUT SONIC OUT OF BUSINESS," one commenter proclaims.
But, it's pretty easy to see why the CosMc's didn't do well when we look at the majority of the comments about the new outlet. People don't like McDonald's at the moment, and most of the responses reflect that.
Something that hits far too close to home is one particular comment. "There's no way they last one day open. Their ice cream machines never work how're they gonna open a whole place depending on one." It's a fair point too.
The ongoing boycott of McDonald's due to its involvement in the war in Gaza has resulted in its first quarterly decline since 2020. Many comments about CosMc's call back to the ongoing boycott, perhaps signaling why the company is still struggling to bring in the bucks.
