Costco is a massive chain of warehouse retail stores in the US selling everything from food and groceries to household appliances and hardware. However, as the stores are a 'membership only' affair, the company is making one upcoming change known ahead of time.
Starting in the Summer of 2025, Costco will change soft drinks in its Food Court area from Pepsi to Coca-Cola. Per a report by the Daily Mail, the company CEO, Ron Vachris, confirmed the change earlier this month. A shareholder reportedly asked if the rumors were true in a meeting, as some have theorized about the change for a while. In response, Vachris said, " This summer, we will be converting our food court fountain business back to Coca-Cola." The retailer previously swapped from Coca-Cola to Pepsi back in 2013.
This change might sound like a complete non-issue if you don't shop at Costco, but it's significant to long-term users of the chain. Costco sells a combo of a soda and hotdog for $1.50, and according to CNN, that price has not changed for almost four decades. The outlet also reports that while the deal loses the chain money, it offsets the loss by raising prices on other products.
Costco also reportedly sold 150 million of the soda hotdog combos last year alone.
The Costco Combo Deal Is Safe Despite The Supplier Change
The CNN report says that Costco's chief financial officer assured customers the $1.50 deal was safe last year. The switch reportedly includes more than simply drinks machines and syrups. It also includes cups, straws, and several other products.
We're not about to step into the debate about whether Coca-Cola is better than Pepsi, but the upcoming change seems to have gone down well on social media.
One user on X, @bigjeffm, says, 'Excellent news. Pepsi is disgusting.' A sentiment upvoted over a hundred times.
Another user, @Gettyburg24, cheekily asks, 'Can they switch back to cocaine in Coke as well?' On the other hand, some aren't quite so elated. One comment with hundreds of likes by @schuld_eth says, 'A tragedy. Pepsi is superior to Coke. At least we'll have Diet Coke.' Another popular response by @Austin_Medzz simply reads, 'PEPSI > COKE.'
