Let's be honest, there are two types of people that are preparing for the Super Bowl right now. The first are people who love football and cannot wait for the game. Then, there are those who just come for the snacks and the halftime show. Both types of people are important for an amazing Super Bowl party so you want to make sure you cater to both. You have the big screen TV and some beer for the football lovers, now what snacks should you have for those who come for the food? While there are a variety of great options you could choose from, here are 6 foods to avoid brining to your Super Bowl party.
Good Foods Vs. Foods To Avoid Brining To Your Super Bowl Party
Before diving into the specifics, let's classify what makes a food a good or bad option for your Super Bowl party. For your Super Bowl party you want your food to be simple to prepare, able to feed the masses, and be something that everyone can enjoy. If it is too intricate, takes too much time, or has too bizarre of a flavor profile it is not the best option for game day.
Some typical fan favorites for a Super Bowl party are:
- Pizza
- Wings
- Chips
- Mozzarella sticks
- Pigs in a blanket
6 Foods To Avoid Brining To The Party
Now that we discussed some favorites it is time to get into the foods to avoid bringing. Some of the foods on this list are actually personal favorites of mine, but I can understand how they made it to the list. Northjersey.com made this list and we are going to dissect it here. Let's dive in.
1. Store Bought Potato Skins

Notice how the title specifically mentions the words store bought. That is because if you make your own they will turn out substantially better. However, that takes time and effort so make sure you have that. While the store bought ones look good on the box, they are always disappointing. Every year someone brings these and every year I am filled with newfound hope only to be let down again. The potato slices are super thick and they dry out in the oven when you are heating them up. The topping to potato ratio is always off and honestly it is just never a good time.
Also, this goes for things likes store bought puff pasty bites or any sort of pasty pre-made frozen treat. They look great on the box but they just end up being dry and disappointing No one needs a dry mouth while they are cheering on their team. No amount of beer can fix that.
2. Chili With Beans

Now hear me out with this one. I am an avid chili lover and I make a mean chili myself (not to brag). However, it can be messy and it requires a bowl, which requires cleaning. Not to mention for it to be amazing you need some homemade cornbread so we are starting to add up on time here because you would need to make the fresh chili and the cornbread. Also, people drink at the Super Bowl party so you don't want someone to spill that dark red chili on your carpet. You want easy to eat foods that you can serve on paper plates. Not to mention, you don't want to feed a house full of people who will be drinking beans...I am just saying. Final thoughts on the chili situation, it is a dish that everyone has different preferences on. Some people like it spicy, some like it sweet, others like it cheesy or loaded. It is a hard dish to get everyone to enjoy so it is one of the foods to avoid for the Super Bowl party.
3. Soft Pretzels

I know this one may surprise some people but hear me out. You always buy more of this than you need. They look good in theory but after everyone eats one or two they realize the soft pretzels are not so soft. Not only that but they are so dry that you can't eat that many. Then they get left there for the entire party, the lid begins to collect moisture and you are left with pounds of soggy bread...not fun. So yea, this is one of the foods to avoid as well.
4. Pre-Packed Guacamole

Again, if you are going to bring this...do it right. The stores never make guacamole right. I swear you can taste the plastic casing that it comes in. Guacamole is a fantastic addition to your Super Bowl party, so if you want to bring some make it yourself. However, if you try to bring some pre-packed guacamole from the store into my house, it will end up right in the trash... do not do it.
5. Any Sort of Leftovers

I feel like this one is self explanatory. It is a Super Bowl party, not a chance to clean out your fridge. If you own family doesn't want to eat your leftovers, what makes you think all of your friends do? It's gross and it is definitely something to be avoided. Leave the leftovers at home and get a bit more creative.
6. Fruit and Veggie Trays

This one physically pains me to write because...I am this person. I am a pretty healthy eater and I adore a good fruit and veggie tray. I mean look how delicious that photo looks, how could anyone not want to eat that!? Granted, I make them myself because one thing you should have learned from this list is that store bought is not the way to go.
However, I am typically alone in my love of fruit and veggie platters during a Super Bowl party. This is not the party that people are watching their figure at. Additionally, few people crave celery or blueberries when they are guzzling beer. So, unless you have a lot of healthy friends I would skip on this or you will be wasting a lot of fresh fruit and veggies. However, if it is at my house fruit and veggie platters are always welcome!
