A woman landed herself in the emergency room after a strange sequence of events, all of which started with chopping an onion.
Reddit user u/TastesLikeChitwan shared her story on the popular r/mildlyinfuritating subreddit. She explained that she was feeling under the weather and decided to cook up a pot of arroz caldo. It's a Filipino dish usually containing rice and chicken in a broth. The writer explains that she grabbed an onion, but a bit from the dry root end splintered and nestled itself in her thumb.
She figured the splinter would eventually dislodge itself without help. However, she woke up the following morning with a "red streaking going up my arm, along with swelling and pain." TastesLikeChitwan explains that she made a virtual appointment and was told it was a "bad, advancing infection" and that "whatever was on the onion was bad." The online appointment prompted one in-person for antibiotics and to have the splinter removed.
The post explains that Urgent Care advised her that she would need a session in the emergency room for blood cultures and IV antibiotics. Fortunately, when the woman got to the ER, she was told that those measures were unnecessary. Doctors removed the splinter and gave a prescription for oral antibiotics.
The poster concludes by explaining that the onion was rotten inside, but her dish was delicious!
Comments Suggest Trips To The Emergency Room For Similar Incidents Aren't Uncommon
u/TastesLikeChitwan's post has garnered over 13k upvotes and hundreds of comments at the time of writing. While most replies simply wish the poster well, a surprising number share similar stories. u/No-Fondant-4719 replies, "I know this ****hurt. I got a splinter from a pineapple before." Another user, u/Runalii, explains a scenario with a pet. "I had a dog in my ICU for a post-op abdominal abscess drain/flush. And as it turns out, it was a tiny grass seed (an awn) of 2mm in size."
While onions are a staple in many kitchens, some people detest them. u/Splatfan1 writes, "I never knew my dad hating onions thus them not being a part of the food in the household could save me from a deadly splinter. You learn something every day."
