Sometimes, a burger is just so good you can't help but wolf it down, but this can lead to some pretty serious repercussions, sometimes needing the ER.
The 30-year-old man from Singapore wasn't just a particularly hungry customer. He was taking part in a food challenge in a local restaurant. The challenge required him to eat the 7-pound burger as fast as he could.
In 30 minutes, the whole thing was gone. But, despite his impressive achievement, the challenge wasn't over for the speed eater. The burger, although chewed and swallowed, wasn't going anywhere, and he admitted himself to the ER.
The entire 7 pounds of burger was sitting in his stomach. It wasn't being digested quickly enough and was stretching his stomach to a dangerous level. He was unable to pass gas and was at risk of gastric perforation.
Big Beefy Burger Bursts Belly
The situation became dire for the burger-eating champion as the meat monstrosity refused to move from his overextended stomach. Doctors performed a CT scan on his stomach to take a look at the immovable food in his gut.
The gasses and food in his belly were putting serious pressure on the rest of his body. Having a stomach that full for that long can also lead to lower blood pressure and damaged organs. So, doctors decided to try and break down the burger themselves.
By inserting a tube into his nose, the doctors hoped to release some of the pressure in his stomach. However, this didn't work, and the food just stayed there, continuing to endanger the man's life. The situation was becoming desperate, and doctors considered performing surgery.
But, five days later, the burger eater finally farted, releasing long pent up gas that was threatening his life. The huge release lowered the pressure in his overinflated stomach and was a sign that his digestive system was doing its thing.
Once things got moving again, the burger was broken down, and he was finally able to take the long-awaited toilet trip. I imagine that the way out was significantly more of a challenge than the way in. He will be a little more hesitant taking on food challenges in future, I imagine. Leave it to the pros.
