When I heard that Girl Scouts are being sued over what was being found in their cookies, I would expect it to be something highly addictive, explaining why they're so moreish. But, instead, it turns out that Girl Scout cookies may contain very harmful ingredients, which is way less fun.
The nonprofit Girl Scouts, as well as the cookies licenced producers ABC Bakers and Ferrero USA's Little Brownie Bakers, have had a proposed class action lawsuit filed against them. It claims that their beloved cookies contain both pesticides and heavy metals.
They claim that a study has found that the Girl Scout cookies contain aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Each of these has allegedly been found in dangerous levels that could harm both the environment and people's health.
As well as the heavy metals, glyphosate, a pesticide, has been found. Of all the cookies, Thin Mints have been found to have the most. Such a shame for the fan favourite.
A Sad Day For Nonprofit Girl Scout Cookies
These are some pretty damning results for the cookies that have been loved by Americans for generations. Although the company is out to do good, on the whole, it's allegedly been poisoning its customers.
"While the entire sales practice system for Girl Scout Cookies is built on a foundation of ethics and teaching young girls sustainable business practices, defendants failed to uphold this standard themselves," the lawsuit says.
Girl Scouts spoke out about the lawsuit in a blog post, addressing the unsafe ingredients. "The health and safety of Girl Scouts and cookie customers is our top priority. Rest assured: Girl Scout Cookies are safe to consume."
However, the investigation will be ongoing to discover just how safe they are.
This lawsuit comes amid several other investigations into food safety, especially in the confectionary sector. A study from the George Washington University found that an alarming amount of the chocolate sold in the US contains heavy metals that exceed guidelines.
It isn't just Girl Scout cookies that are poisoning the population, it's the chocolate too. How these products are able to get through the FDA is a mystery and quite alarming.
