Every so often I'll order a fish sandwich that absolutely slaps and wonder why I don't order them more. And then I'll order something along the lines of McDonald's fillet 'o' fish and remember exactly why I almost never eat them. But, there is one reigning champ when it comes to not only the cheapest but also possibly the best fast food fish sandwich out there.
White Castle does have a fish slider for only $2.59, making it the cheapest fast food fish between bread. But, if we're being picky, it's a slider, not a sandwich. It'll take the edge off your hunger, but it's not going to fill you up the way a fish sandwich should.
Technically, there are two fast food fish sandwiches that sit neck and neck for cheapest. Both Sonic and McDonald's are the same price at $4.79 each. However, in my humble opinion, only one of those is worth eating.
McDonalds putting cheese on their fish sandwich does little to elevate the flavorless breaded Alaskan pollock fillet. Sonic uses the same fish, but along with the tartar sauce, they add pickles and lettuce. These not only add a little fresh crunch but also marry with the fish flavor much better than cheese. Who on earth puts cheese on fish?
Hooking The Best Fast Food Fish Sandwich Deal
If you're willing to spend a little more, and are looking for the best bang for your buck, there are plenty more fast food fish sandwiches out there. As I said, when a fish sandwich is bad, it's really bad. Under-flavored batter on previously frozen low-quality fish with overpowering, or wrong burger fillings can result in something that will leave you asking why you didn't just go for a hamburger.
If you're happy to fork out less than an extra dollar, you can get the Popeyes' Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich. Honestly, they don't do anything drastically different from the rest except season well, and use better ingredients.
For me, the Popeyes seasoned batter combined with their pickles and tartar sauce just ticks all the boxes. It isn't the cheapest fast food fish sandwich out there, but I think it's up there with the best for the price.
