Bud Light has fallen from grace in the US, being replaced with another beer as the favorite on tap.
As of November of this year, Michelob Ultra has taken the number one spot as the favorite US tap beer. According to Draftline Technologies, the superlight Michelob Ultra has surpassed the ever-popular Bud Light in tap sales. This marks a huge success for the beer, finally taking the long-held thone from the barely drinkable excuse for lager.
Anyone who has ever left the US and drank a beer from a country like the Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, or even dare I say, the UK will know the state of the US beer industry. Light beer, AKA pondwater, is seen as a sin in most beer-drinking countries. Beer is not supposed to be low calorie and good lord, it is not supposed to be low percentage.
Along with the reduction of calories and volume comes the reduction of flavor. Bud Light is usually the only thing left on supermarket shelves after a sunny day or a big sports game in Europe. Yet, it was the favorite tap beer of the US for years.
A New King For The Tap Beer Crown
Michelob Ultra is also not a great beer, but the US loves to drink weak flavorless lagers, and this is the new king. I doubt this is due to one tasting better than the other though. They both taste like water that has had bread sat in it overnight.
Back in 2023, a boycott of Bud Light hammered their sales. After featuring an advert with Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender TikTok star, many Americans stopped drinking Bud Light. Consequently, sales of Bud Light cans, bottles, and pints took a tumble, and they haven't stopped yet.
Since then, Bud Light lost not only its number one place in the tap beer charts but overall sales in the US to boot. Currently, it is third, behind the delicious Modello Especial at #1 and Michelob Ultra at #2.
It isn't only their outspoken advertising that has dampened their Bud Light tap beer sales though. In recent years, Michelob Ultra has really pushed to be the new lite beer on the scene. They have become the sponsors for many of America's favorite sports, appearing in the Olympics.
When Pilsner Urquell finally makes its way across the sea, all three of the popular tap beers will have to step aside, I am sure. Full-fat, high-percentage beer is the future.
