A cold, foamy, crisp beer is up there with one of the best things man has done during our paltry time on the earth. But, make that beer warm and flat, and all of a sudden, it's disgusting. Flat beer is a sin.
So, when you pop a can or pour a pint of beer, and it comes out bubble-free and flat, you need to sort something out. Thankfully, I have the knowledge you need to ensure that your beer is never without carbonation again.
Usually, it is either a problem with temperature or storage. So, before you go throwing your beers out, try these quick tips to bring it back to life.
If Your Beers Are The Wrong Temperature, It's Gonna Have A Bad Time
Do you know why your beer is always cold? It's because, without that specific temperature range, the carbonation just disappears. If you are storing your beer keg, bottles, or cans in too warm of an area it'll go flat.
But don't worry, this isn't permanent. Beer storage ensures that if you bring your beer back to temp, it'll revive itself. Simply bring your beer down between 34°F to 36°F, and you'll have a nice foamy beverage again.
It's worth bearing in mind that the temperature of your glass is important, too. Pouring a crispy, hoppy boii into a warm glass is going to kill the fizz. A warm glass will bring the temperature up and make for a flat beer. But that should be obvious, really.
Check Your Equipement
If you're pouring from a keg, there is a whole world of issues that could be the problem. Believe it or not, proper beer pours take some specific science. A few things to check are:
- Clean lines - If your beer lines are dirty, then your beer will come out not only flat, but tasting disgusting. Regular line cleaning is essential.
- Pressure Check - With anything on draft, the pressure in the keg needs to be at the correct levels. Anything less will result in flat beer, and too much will end up with a glass full of foam. You'll be wanting something in the 12 to 14 psi range.
Guide To Glasswear
You may find the huge array of glasses for all the various beers a little obnoxious, but there is a good reason for it. If you serve a beer out of a coffee mug, you'll find it goes flat very fast. Beer glasses are designed to maintain a good head and keep carbonation. You don't need anything fancy, but just make sure you're serving your beer from a clean, cold beer glass, and you'll be grand.
